Pupil names new street on Gleeson’s latest Egremont development, Castle Meadows

Gleeson Homes, the leading high-quality affordable housebuilder, is delighted to announce its collaboration with Bookwell Primary School. Through an exciting street-naming competition, primary school pupils have made their mark Gleeson’s new development in Egremont.

Castle Meadows in Egremont is set to provide 164 much-needed new homes to Cumbria, with first homes being released for sale in Winter 2025. In preparation of the development launch, Gleeson proudly collaborated with Bookwell Primary School as part of its ongoing community strategy, to launch a creative and engaging street-naming competition.

During a recent site visit in partnership with the school, the Gleeson team invited pupils to name one of six new streets on the development. The brief? Choose names inspired by the historic Egremont Castle, which links the site to the school and the town’s rich heritage.

Among many impressive entries, one stood out. Year 1 pupil Penny Beatson suggested “De Lucy Street,” honouring the noble De Lucy family, the former owners of Egremont Castle and subjects of Wordsworth’s poem The Horn of Egremont Castle. Penny’s inspiration was also deeply personal, as she dedicated the name to her late great-grandmother, also named Lucy.

Penny’s winning street name will now become a permanent part of the town’s landscape, and she will be invited to officially open the Castle Meadows Sales Centre later this year, unveiling the street she named.

I would like to thank Gleeson Homes for allowing our school to get involved in the new Castle Meadows development. The children absolutely loved taking part in the competition and were really excited about the chance to name a street in Egremont. It gave them a real sense of pride knowing they were contributing to something that will be part of the town for years to come. The children were all thrilled when Penny’s street name was announced as the winner – she was absolutely delighted! We’re really looking forward to seeing the street name go up.
