Gleeson release first homes at new development in Chopwell

Gleeson Homes has launched a much-needed development of 205 homes in Chopwell, the former coal mining village in Gateshead, bringing a collection of brand-new affordable, quality homes to the area.

The new development, named Moorland Green, is located off Mill Road in Chopwell, and will be made up of traditionally built two, three and four bedroom homes. The first homes were put up for sale on Friday the 15th of January, with prices starting at £104,995 for a two bedroom semi-detached home.

With the development predicted to be highly desirable for local people, especially amongst first-time buyers and young families, the Government backed Help to Buy: Equity Loan scheme, will ensure that many of the homes at Moorland Green are likely to cost less than local rent levels. Further homes will be released for sale throughout 2021, with the first homeowners expected to move into their home in Spring.

Located beside beautiful woodland, Moorland Green is in a protected wildlife and nature zone, meaning Gleeson will be contributing £140,000 towards local ecology and tree protection, ensuring that grassland, hedgerows and all wildlife habitats are sustained and can flourish alongside the new development.

A sum of £83,350 will also be donated towards traffic signalling and improving local roads around the new development, creating safe and functional roads in Chopwell.

Additionally, a community herb garden is set to be planted on the development in collaboration with a primary school as part of Gleeson’s Community Matters programme which sees the housebuilder work with local communities to create better facilities, support charities and sponsor local sports teams and groups.

Throughout the duration of the build, Gleeson will be creating many employment opportunities for local people and sub-contractors in the area. Gleeson has recently employed local apprentice bricklayer, 19-year-old Lewis Tunstall at Moorland Green. Lewis is from the Chopwell area and is making a great impression so far.

Ed Alder, Operations Director at Gleeson said:

“We are delighted to be bringing these much-needed new homes to Gateshead; at the heart of the community the new homes at Moorland Green will be ideal for local people, including young, first time buyers and low to mid income families, helping them gain the opportunity to make their first steps onto the property ladder.

Working with the local planners, we will ensure that local ecology and green space is preserved, protected, and can flourish meaning that residents of Moorland Green and surrounding neighbourhoods will live in a picturesque area for many years to come.”

Gleeson boasts a unique position in the housebuilding sector, building high quality, low-cost homes, for people that need them, in the areas that they want to live throughout the North and Midlands.
