Gleeson provides community grant to Hedon & District Men in Sheds

Gleeson Homes is proud to support Hedon & District Men in Sheds with a £500 Community Matters grant, helping the newly formed organisation take its next steps toward establishing a dedicated community hub for local residents. The organisation aims to reduce social isolation and improve wellbeing across Hedon and the surrounding area.

Formed in late 2025, Hedon & District Men in Sheds was created to provide a welcoming, inclusive space where adults can come together to connect, share skills and enjoy meaningful activities. The UK Men’s Sheds Association, established in 2008, supports more than 1,100 Sheds nationwide, helping around 30,000 to 33,000 people each week through practical activities, social connection and wellbeing support.

With 35 prospective members already expressing interest, the group is meeting a clear local need for a safe, social environment that helps reduce loneliness and supports positive mental wellbeing.

The organisation is currently exploring options for a permanent base, including the potential transformation of the former Hedon railway station into a fully equipped community facility. This future hub would offer hands‑on workshop projects, recreational sessions and peer‑to‑peer support, empowering members to build confidence, develop new skills and form lasting friendships.

The model provides an accessible, low‑pressure route for men, especially retirees, widowers, or those living alone, to regain social networks and emotional support, designed to combat social isolation.

Gleeson’s £500 grant will help cover essential start‑up costs as the group works towards securing its first physical space and delivering a programme of community‑led activities.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Gleeson for supporting our mission at such a crucial stage, as we look to establish ourselves in our community. Our shed will be a place where people can come together, find companionship, and rediscover purpose. This donation brings us one step closer to creating a much-needed space that will benefit our community for years to come.”
