Gleeson increases the number of female apprentices by 233%

Women in Construction Week 2026 welcomes the opportunity to recognise the growing contribution of women across the homebuilding sector and to reaffirm MJ Gleeson’s responsibility to widen access and accelerate progress in the industry to build more diverse teams.

The construction industry continues to face a significant skills shortage. Organisations such as the Construction Industry Training Board regularly highlight labour gaps across trade and professional roles. At a time when demand for new homes remains high, ensuring that women are represented across all areas of the workforce is not only a matter of fairness - it is essential to strengthening the talent pipeline and supporting long-term growth.

At Gleeson, increasing female participation is a strategic priority, with measurable progress over the past five years. Gleeson is pleased to share that female apprentice recruitment has increased by approximately 233% over the past five years, while representation in site-based roles has nearly doubled.

These figures reflect a growing confidence among women entering the industry, particularly in site-based and trade roles that have historically seen low female representation.

Industry partnerships are also playing a vital role in opening doors. Since November 2024, Gleeson has supported eight placements through the HBF Women into Homebuilding Programme. One internal colleague successfully transitioned into site management in our South and West Yorkshire region, while another placement led to a full-time role.

Looking ahead, Gleeson is proud to be sponsoring two further placements as part of the Spring 2026 cohort, with applications open until 22 March 2026. By continuing to invest in these programmes, Gleeson is not simply offering short-term experience but building sustainable career pathways.

These structured routes into construction are proving that when women are given access, visibility and clear progression opportunities, they will not only enter the industry, but they will also stay and thrive within it.

“Women are seriously under-represented in our industry, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t opportunities for women in construction. At MJ Gleeson, we are committed to building a more inclusive workplace. As Chair of the Board, one of my roles is to ensure we have a more inclusive workplace. That means championing our HR policies, to making sure that when I am on site, the female facilities are up to standard. Creating an environment where women can thrive is fundamental to attracting and retaining talent.”

Chair of the Board at MJ Gleeson PLC

Women in Construction Week is an important moment to celebrate progress, but it also underlines the work still to be done. By investing in apprenticeships, supporting structured industry programmes and ensuring inclusive leadership from boardroom to building site, the sector can build a stronger, more resilient workforce for the future.
