Cumbria Tourism collaborates with Gleeson Homes to provide more affordable homes for the local tourism workforce

Affordable housebuilder Gleeson Homes is delighted to be collaborating with Cumbria Tourism to retain tourism talent within the county, by helping people working in tourism and hospitality get on the property ladder.

The new collaboration with Gleeson Homes fits with Cumbria Tourism’s workforce strategy to encourage people to live, work, invest and study in Cumbria.

Latest figures from its most recent Business Performance Survey (November 2023) – carried out in conjunction with Lamont Pridmore – reveal that 86% of businesses cite a lack of affordable housing as an issue, along with the cost of accommodation for employees (76%).

The collaboration also algins closely with Gleeson’s focus on developing high quality, affordable and energy-efficient housing within commutable distances of tourism and hospitality hotspots. Gleeson Homes currently has ten developments around the west coast of Cumbria and Carlisle, which are projected to deliver 650 affordable homes for local buyers by Autumn 2028.

In addition to bringing more affordable homes to the area, Gleeson will also be providing exclusive offers for those working in the sector. This includes providing Cumbria Tourism’s local residents card ‘MyCumbria’, giving cardholders £500 off legal fees when they buy a new Gleeson home and offering hospitality workers in Cumbria £1,500 towards options and extrasδ when they reserve a new home with Gleeson.

"We are delighted to collaborate with Cumbria Tourism to support the local visitor economy, by providing our high-quality, affordable homes for those in the tourism and hospitality workforce, and indeed all those in need of homes in Cumbria. The partnership aligns with our mission to provide affordable homes where they are needed most and for those who need them most, as well as to support and invest in our local communities.”

Simon Dicanio, Sales Director at Gleeson Homes

“Our research shows that staff housing is a key priority for businesses across the visitor economy. Striking the right balance of housing to support jobs and help communities to thrive and grow is really important, and we’re excited to be working with Gleeson Homes to develop innovative solutions which do just that! This new strategic collaboration is also very timely because we are currently recruiting for a new Worker Transport Coordinator to coordinate existing and new transport options across Cumbria which help businesses to get workers to and from their shifts at key times. Working together to address fundamental issues around staff transport and housing will be vital, particularly for young people who may worry about the perceived costs of staying in the county to live and work.”

Rachel Tyson, Cumbria Tourism’s Head of Partnerships and Projects

The new collaboration sees Gleeson Homes join Cumbria Tourism’s core network of 22 like-minded Patron and Strategic Partners who draw on their collective expertise to champion effective destination management and support businesses, visitors and local communities across the county.
