Gleeson supports the HBF Women into Homebuilding Programme
Gleeson Homes proudly sponsored and facilitated two site-based work placements through the Women into Homebuilding Programme.
Launched in association with the Home Builders Federation, the programme commenced in October 2024, offering practical experience to local women who are interested in exploring a career in the construction industry.
As part of the programme, Gleeson welcomed two women, Claudia and Mercy, across its developments based in the East Yorkshire and Greater Manchester and Merseyside regions.
Over the course of the two-week placement, Claudia shadowed the Site Management team at Gleeson’s Safari development in Knowsley and Mercy was based at the recently launched Kingston Fields development in Hull.
Summarising her work experience with Gleeson, Claudia commented: “For the two weeks I spent on site, the team made sure I got involved in as many daily site management activities as possible. This meant I was exposed to various different stakeholders within the company and got a broad overview of exactly what is involved in providing new homes for people. Although I was often the only female on site, I felt very much included and welcome for the entire duration of the placement."
Mercy, whose work placement was based at Kingston Fields, added: “The programme enabled me to gain additional skills and gain a better understanding of the construction industry. The programme also gave me insight into the administrative aspect of the construction industry, where I was able to shadow the site management team and witness their day-to-day activities. It’s been a great experience, allowing me to build a network of contacts and gain professional references for future opportunities.”
Reflecting on her experience with Gleeson, Claudia also added: “Pursuing a career that is not traditionally associated with women is incredibly rewarding. Not only are you challenging societal norms, but you can also carve a very successful career within a dynamic field. The construction industry gives you the opportunity to take part in projects which are unlike anything within any other sector, and that you can truly be proud of. Any girl can take on any role if they truly want to, even if they love all things girly just like me!”
“With women representing just 16% of the construction industry, the programme has been designed to help address some of the barriers to women entering the industry and increase awareness of site management careers to a wider talent pool. Encouraging more females to join our industry is something we are very passionate about at Gleeson. Our site teams were delighted to welcome Claudia and Mercy for a two-week placement, enabling them to gain valuable knowledge and experience from our teams.”
