How to dress your bed

Dressing your bed with lush accessories is absolutely crucial to create that stunning show home inspired bedroom look. However, if you’re in a rush in the morning, styling your bed to perfection probably isn’t your number one priority.

And, that’s where our interior designer, Vanessa Loveridge, Director of Signature Interiors is here to help, with these handy tips to help create that luxurious look, quickly, easily and on a budget with some key product suggestions.

Let’s turn your bed from boring, to beautiful!

When dressing a bed, it‘s important to settle on a colour palette. Simple, white or cream bedsheets are the perfect neutral base to begin with, meaning you can then add pops of colour or pattern, through cushions or throws in complimentary colours. If you want to add some colour to your bedroom for a trendy aesthetic look, similar to our the Cork pictured at our Vickers Grange show home in South Yorkshire, pair some orange shades with gold accessories to truly bring the Autumn feel to your home.

When buying soft furnishings for your bed, make sure you purchase the four ultimate bed styling essentials, as well as a good mattress, pillow protectors, mattress protector, and bottom sheets.

  1. Duvet cover – It goes without saying that to make your bed beautiful you’ll need a duvet cover. This protective, comfy layer over the top of your duvet, is the most visible part of your bedding. A prerequisite of duvet covers is that they are machine washable, generally inexpensive, and easy to switch out if you get bored of one style. Cotton, silk, or polyester there are many duvet colour materials, textures, styles and colours to choose from.

  1. Bedspread – To get that hotel bed feel you’ll need a bedspread. A bedspread is a lightweight, quilted cover often used as a decorative element to make your bed extra stunning. Normally the full size of the bed, the bedspread can cover your whole bed, perfect for if you’re duvet cover needs an iron! Alternatively, it can be styled by being folded in half, this is a great styling tip for bedspreads which are an accent colour complimenting your duvet cover. This look creates an interesting visual, as well as a range of colours and textures.

  1. Throw –  A vital furnishing for every bed; throws can used for layering and creating a cosy feel in your bedroom. To style, casually drape throws at the end of your bed to get a relaxed look. Consider bringing in a pop of colour or pattern to your bedroom with your throw.

  1. Cushions - You will never see a designer styled bed lacking cushions. Cushions add luxury and layers but also can help you inject personality. Cushions are the final feature that every bed demands and can be a massive focal point of your bed, and the whole bedroom!  When buying cushions consider different shapes, size, textures and colours that work together and pair your cushions in twos or use the grouping in threes rule.

Dressing beds is all about attention to detail. Little extras such as buttons on your bedding, a piped edge or embroidery can add another layer of sophistication to your bed’s aesthetic.

Go for the best bedding you can afford, it is an investment after all, we do spend 1/3 of our life sleeping! Not only will it be comfortable and stylish, but it will also withstand weekly washing. Additionally, Vanessa advises that you should remember to give pillows and duvets a good shake and plump before dressing your bed, and after every wash, just to make sure that the filling evens out, creating a plush cushioned texture and shape.

Much like a new build home, your bed is a blank canvas which can be dressed however best fits your style. There is just something about getting into a nicely made up bed that feels extra special, so, we hope our tips have helped inspire you to dress your bed for not only comfort but style too.
