Moving day checklist

Your new Gleeson home is almost complete, and the excitement is building. Getting the keys will be one of the most exciting days of your life, especially if, like 86% of our buyers this is your first owned home.

There’s many emotions attached to moving house, from the joy to achieving home ownership or leaving a rented home, to the apprehension of leaving your comfort zone, which is perhaps provided by living with your parents. If you’re a downsizer, maybe you’re feeling nostalgic and are set to be leaving behind a home you’ve lived in for a long time or perhaps you’re more than ready for pastures new. Or you might be upsizing and can’t wait for more space, making the step from your first home to your forever home.

Whatever your circumstance, we’ve put together a helpful checklist of things you should do in the run up to moving in to ensure that the day goes smoothly without a hitch. 

  • Book your removal company.

When you have a date confirmed for your completion, make sure you book a removal company. Take the time to shop around and find a removal company who have experience with moving people into new build homes. Explain to them how many items you will have to move, including beds, your sofa and large appliances, this will ensure you get an accurate quote. Unless you have relatively little to move, hiring a professional company really does help, there is an art to packing fragile items so that they’re protected and don’t break in transit, plus removal workers are used to carrying large weights and can do so in a safe way.

  • Get organised and pack

This one goes without saying but make sure that you are organised when packing. If you’re moving out of your parents’ home, you’ve likely got everything stored in one place ready for your move, however if you’re moving from a rented home or an owned home, it can be a little more complex with a whole house to empty.

To make things easier, pack the contents of each room one by one and label boxes religiously, by room and by what’s inside, plus, make sure you have plenty of bubble wrap handy! It’s also worth making sure you keep things you’ll need urgently on the day in one separate box, such as toiletries, spare clothes, and your kettle. Packing is a great time to get rid of clutter, try to not take anything to your new house that you haven’t used in your current one for six months.

  • Book a day or two off work

If your completion day is mid-week, it’s definitely worth booking a couple of days off work for your move. Moving home is a full day’s job and can be fairly strenuous work. Booking the day off after your move is a good idea too, that way you can unpack and settle in your new home.

  • Book your wifi engineer

Don’t get caught out with a long wait for broadband. It can take weeks to get a broadband engineer out to your home to set up the line, so book an appointment early for a date that you know you’ll be moved in by. There’s nothing worse than being wifi-less, no Netflix in your new home would be a total disaster!

  • Order bins

As your new home is totally new, there will never have been any dustbins. Don’t worry though, it’s a simple process to get sorted. Just contact your local council and arrange to have your bins delivered. Then, make sure that the council are aware that you have moved in and give you a bin rota, so that you know what days to put your bin out for collection.

  • Arrange buildings and contents insurance

Your home is such an important asset, so it’s crucial that it’s insured it from the moment that you complete. All of our new build homes have a 10-year NHBC warranty and a two-year Gleeson warranty but being insured is key too. Based on a range of attributes such as your location, belongings, and the size of your home, home insurance covers you in the event of your house being burgled, damaged in a flood or fire and much more.

  • Redirect your post

To stop new tenants in your previously rented home, or your parents from opening your mail, make sure that you get your mail re-directed to your new home by Royal Mail. Not only does this stop snoopers and ensures you don’t miss any important letters, but it also protects your information from identity theft. You can set up your redirect to commence from your moving day and it can be in place for as long as you need it to be.
