Beautiful garden with swinging egg chair

How to style your garden this summer

Summer is here and we’re loving the longer days and warmer weather.

There’s no doubt that one of the best things about summer is being able to spend time outside in the sunshine and what better place to do that than in your own Gleeson garden.

Every Gleeson home comes with a garden and each garden is a blank canvas, just waiting for you to put your stamp on it. We often forget that a garden is an extension of your home, an extra room if you like. So, why wouldn’t you style it up and create a gorgeous space with the latest trends just like your interior? With these top tips, you’ll easily achieve a stylish retreat where you can relax and enjoy your summer.

Furniture

Whether you’re alone or entertaining guests in your new home, you’ll need some garden furniture. Of course, there are many different options to suit your style and budget but we can’t talk about garden furniture without mentioning rattan. This 1970’s trend is back and we can totally understand why. Rattan furniture is the perfect combination of style and comfort, so if you’re after a comfy corner sofa or a dining table and chair set you can guarantee there will be a stunning rattan option out there to suit your taste.

If you prefer a rustic look, you could try a little DIY and opt for a wooden furniture set that you can style up with a lick of paint. Whether you go for trusty grey tones or something more bold, this is sure to give your garden a little life. Plus, you can always sand your furniture down and finish it with a little teak oil if your taste changes and you fancy something a little more neutral and timeless.

If you’re looking to create a spot in the garden, just for you to relax and have a moment to yourself, then a swinging chair, commonly known as an egg chair, is the perfect way to do so. This pod like feature adds a touch of elegance and escapism to your garden. Most often designed with an open weave material, you can intertwine some outdoor fairy lights around your chair, allowing you to light up chilled evenings.

Plants and Pots

Whether you’re green fingered and want to delve into some gardening or prefer an easy life and pick a potted plant, a little bit of greenery goes a long way. We suggest an evergreen shrub, so that your garden is blooming all year round. Evergreens are known for their minimal maintenance making them the ultimate choice for your garden.  Alternatively,  you could always create a beautiful oasis and plant yourself a palm tree, which are hardy down to minus six degrees, meaning they’ll survive most English winters.

Hanging baskets are another stunning addition to your garden and are great for adding detail at higher zones, creating eye-catching features at different levels. Just don’t forget they’ll need regularly (probably daily) watering in warmer months.

Lighting

No garden would be complete without the ultimate staple; lighting. A well lit garden means that you can enjoy your beautiful outdoor space even after the sun sets. There are so many ways, both inexpensive and a little luxe, to add light to the garden and solar lighting is one of the easiest options, plus it’s sustainable too due to being powered by the sun.

There are many different solar products but our styling tip would be to place solar lighting both on your fencing and some up-lights aligned underneath, to create a stunning spotlight feature. Your fencing doesn’t have to be dull either, embrace a little DIY and add a lick of paint to embody the colour scheme you’ve gone for across your whole garden.

You can utilise lighting to outline pathways, patios, decking or any areas you want to draw a little attention to. You don’t need to be a landscaper to add an element of design to your garden and lighting can help you easily achieve different zones. We’d recommend choosing stake like lighting that can be easily placed in lawns, pebble borders or flower beds, but be sure to space your lighting out evenly to make the design look chic.

String lights are also a beautiful way to define an area and can add a magical touch to a space. These can be added to shrubbery or trees or intertwined around a parasol to add a little ambience to your seating area.

Accessories

Now that you’ve created the perfect space to enjoy on a summer evening, you’ll absolutely need to invest in a citronella candle or two. Not only are candles a beautiful accessory adding that extra element of light to a space, but citronella candles are infused with citronella oil that stems from lemongrass giving off a beautiful summery scent. This scent is scientifically proven to mask any scents that we give off as humans, that then attract pesky little bugs. It goes without saying that the range of this candle may be slightly limited even if there is a gentle breeze, so bulk up and spread your candles out to make sure you have your space covered. With this little hack, you’ll be sure to enjoy your garden well into the summer evenings, undisturbed by any unwanted visitors.

On the theme of accessories we can’t forget outdoor rugs. Outdoor rugs are growing in popularity and are becoming increasingly available from high street stores, providing the perfect way of creating a living space akin to indoors, in your garden. The materials are hardy and waterproof, giving a durable accessory that will survive the English weather. Geo and aztec prints tend to be most common, but there’s lots of different shapes and sizes to choose from.

Pergola

If you fancy a slightly bigger project then we couldn’t not mention pergolas. A pergola can add a touch of luxury to any garden, and gives the perfect space to hang those fairy lights, arrange your furniture, light your candles and style up that outdoor rug. Whether you’re framing a seating area, a dining area or a hot tub, a pergola ties everything together and is an on-trend garden staple. Decorate your pergola with fairy lights or even plant a climber type shrub close by so that over time this garden feature is covered with beautiful flowers.

A garden really is a blank canvas and can easily be transformed into the perfect space for summer.
